Summary

The LifeSkills program is one of the most implemented evidence-based programs used in Iowa, serving elementary, middle and high school students, with an additional parent program. LifeSkills has both hard copies and some digital versions of the program available. With a primary focus on substance abuse and violence prevention, the LifeSkills program teaches the following: self-management skills, social skills, and drug resistance skills.

In accordance with information provided by LifeSkills Training, the following implementation guidelines have been established for Agency prevention professionals choosing to implement this program:

LifeSkills Programs Population of Focus Additional Requirements
Elementary School Program Youth in grades 3-6
Middle School Program Youth in grades 6-9
High School Program Youth in grades 9 and 10
Transitions Program Youth ages 16+ in grades 11 and 12
Parent Program Parents or guardians of youth in grades 6-9 The parent program is recommended for implementation with parents of youth receiving the Middle School Program, however other parents may be served if supported by data and aligned with the strategic plan and work plan for the selected strategy.
